MADISON, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders men's basketball team suffered their first loss since early December this afternoon when they hit the road to take on non-conference opponents, Drew University. The 78-63 loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Scarlet Raiders which was their longest of the season.
Rutgers University-Newark (8-4) was led by
Chase Barneys who netted 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting.
David Logan followed Barneys up with 11 points and pulled down four rebounds while
Quincy Rutherford added 10 and led the team with five rebounds.
Drew University (9-2) received 25 points from Lybrant Robinson which was a game high. Robinson was 6-for-8 from behind the arc and pulled down three rebounds. Riley Collins was second in scoring with 14 points while leading the team with seven assists.Â
The high-scoring Rangers came out and scored 42 points in the first stanza in their home gym. Â The Scarlet Raiders quickly found themselves in a 9-point deficit as the Rangers jumped out to a 13-4 lead. Rutherford cut the lead down to five at the 11 minute mark with a layup. Drew University responded with an 8-0 run to push their lead back out to double digits.Â
As the opening half dwindled down, the Scarlet Raiders chipped the lead down to just five.
Much like the first half, the Rangers started the second half strong and jumped out to a 14-point lead. Both teams suffered a four-minute scoreless streak during the middle of the half.
Jamir Patterson broke the drought with a jumper which also cut their deficit down to 12.Â
The Scarlet Raiders went on a 7-0 run which put momentum on their side. With 8:34 left in the game, Rutherford hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe which cut the Rangers' lead down to just eight. However, much like the Rangers did all game, they rebounded well and went on a small run to give themselves a double-digit lead once more.Â
Rutgers University-Newark was unable to overcome their double-digit deficit as the Rangers would go on to win by 15.
Up next for the Scarlet Raiders will be an NJAC home game against Montclair State University at 8pm at the Golden Dome.Â
