JERSEY CITY, NJ | The men shot 61% from three-point range in the first half and 55% from the floor which gave them the lead that they would carry to the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win over New Jersey City University, 69-57. The win complete's the regular-season sweep over the Gothic Knights this season, which is the first sweep since the 2014-15 season.
Rutgers University-Newark (12-8, 8-5) was led by a career-high 26 points by
Quincy Rutherford. Rutherford also tallied his first career double-double as he led the team with 10 rebounds as well.
Mike Vick added 11 points, four rebounds, seven assists and a steal in a well rounded night.
Chase Barneys hit three triples and finished with 9 points in the win.
New Jersey City University (10-10, 7-6) had Sam Toney and Jaimik Moore lead the way with 15 points in the loss. Denzel Banks was once again held below his season average in his second meeting with the Scarlet Raiders and tallied just eight points.
The first half saw a battle of attrition as both teams fought for every point as nothing came easy in this heated rivalry. Throughout the first half, the score changed hands several times until Barneys hit a three with 3:29 remaining in the first half. That shot gave the Scarlet Raiders a two-point lead and what would turn into the final time that the lead would swap.
A 9-4 run towards the end of the opening stanza pushed Rutgers-Newark's lead out to seven, 36-29, which was their largest of the half.
Quincy Rutherford shot lights out in the first half, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from range and tallying 19 points.
Jordan Salisbury ended the half with a three to send his team into the locker room with an eight-point lead.
Vick gave the Scarlet Raiders their first double-digit lead of the game on a layup to give his team an 11-point, 49-38, lead with 13:09 left in the game. The third-ranked defense in the nation locked in the second half and held NJCU to just two points in the first 10 minutes. This allowed Rutgers-Newark to extend their lead to 15. NJCU would battle back and cut the lead down to eight but couldn't find an answer for Rutherford or the combination to unlock their vaunted defense.
The Scarlet Raiders have now won two straight and will host William Paterson University on Wednesday, February 5 at 8:00 pm at the Golden Dome.
