ASHLAND, VA | The eighth-ranked Scarlet Raiders men's volleyball squad started their Virginia weekend off with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-14) sweep of Randolph-Macon to keep their record unscathed. The opening match was the Scarlet Raiders' first Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) match of the season.
No. 8 Rutgers University-Newark (7-0, 1-0) had
Andrew Zaleck and
Arvind Kumar lead the squad with 13 kills each. Kumar hit .192 while Zaleck hit .167. Leading the charge in the hit percentage department was
Nicholas Arce-Cox who hit .778 and secured seven kills on 9 attacks.
Justin Tuohy paced the team with 39 assists
Jake Connors picked up a team-high 8 digs.
Daniel Quay frustrated the Yellow Jackets at the net as he accumulated four block assists.
Randolph-Macon (3-9, 1-2) was led by Kolby Gibson who tallied seven kills while James Manning tallied 13 assists and a team-high two service aces.
In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders saw themselves trail midway through, however, they battled back to knot it up at 18. Kumar picked up a kill and Tuohy served up an ace to push the Scarlet Raiders out in front of the Yellow Jackets. Randolph-Macon rallied back with a 3-0 run late in the set to tie it up at 23. Arce-Cox found an opening and tallied a kill then followed that up with a block assist to give his team a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Scarlet Raiders quickly got off to a hot start in the second set and jumped out to a 5-1 start. The Yellow Jackets settled in and continually cut the lead down to one, however, the Scarlet Raiders were able to stay ahead and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Once again, Rutgers University-Newark jumped out to lead early and this time kept their foot on the pedal. The Scarlet Raiders held a 14-4 lead halfway through the set and kept that momentum going as they cruised to a 25-14 win.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Marymount and Misericordia in a tri-match starting at 1:00 pm.
