EWING, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark's men's basketball playoff run came to an end Wednesday evening at the hands of top-seeded The College of New Jersey, 65-48. The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) semifinal trip was the first since the 2015-16 season.
Rutgers-Newark (15-12) had NJAC First Team All-Conference honoree,
Chase Barneys, finish with 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the floor. Barneys left everything out on the floor and also led the team with eight rebounds. NJAC Defensive Player of the Year ended the game with eight points and a pair of assists while
Quincy Rutherford tallied five points and seven rebounds.
The College of New Jersey (18-8) was led by NJAC Player of the Year, Randall Walko's, 20 points. Travis Jocelyn added 15 while Ryan Jensen led the team with 11 rebounds.
The clubs played a tightly contested opening half, with the Scarlet Raiders holding a 16-15 lead after 11 minutes. The College of New Jersey responded with an 8-0 run behind five points from Walko. The Scarlet Raiders trailed 27-19 with 6:21 remaining in the half, a score that would remain stagnant for five minutes. Barneys broke the scoring drought after converting a pair from the charity stripe.
Before the end of the first stanza, the College of New Jersey pushed its lead out to 13.
In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders struggled from range, shooting 2-for-15. That would prove to be one of the main difference makers in this NJAC semifinal game. Each time Rutgers-Newark made progress in closing the gap, the Lions pulled away again to hold a consistent double-digit lead.
With 2:44 remaining in the game, Barneys converted a jumper to cut the lead down to 11. Unfortunately, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to build off of that momentum as the Lions punched their ticket to the NJAC Championship game against second-seeded Stockton University after they dispelled Rowan, 96-82.
The men will now await a potential bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament or have their season come to a close.
