NEWARK, NJ | The men's basketball team kept their win streak alive tonight when they hosted Rutgers University-Camden at the Golden Dome. The men took full control of third place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with the, 70-48, win.
Rutgers University-Newark (14-8, 10-5) was once again led by
Quincy Rutherford who exploded in the second half to finish with a game-high 21 points.
Chase Barneys added 14 while
Jamir Patterson scored eight.
Jordan Salisbury led the team with 10 rebounds while adding six points.
Rutgers University-Camden (7-15, 4-11) Isaac Destin and Jake Petrik both tallied 14 points for the Scarlet Raptors and Destin also led the team with 9 rebounds. Ian McCarthy scored seven points in 23 minutes and shot 2-for-5 from three-point range.
The first half saw 27 fouls combined in a physical NJAC contest between the Scarlet Raiders and the Scarlet Raptors. After neither team could pull away from the other Rutgers-Camden found a way to inch away from the Scarlet Raiders as they used a 5-1 run to stretch their lead. Barneys cut the lead down to two, 15-13, with a triple off of a pass from
Jamir Patterson.Â
Once again, Rutgers-Camden was able to pull ahead, however, Patterson closed the gap with a three-point basket from the corner to bring his team within two. For the final 1:18 of the first half, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to find the bottom of the net while stretched their lead out to seven after Dylan Trow hit a shot from range at the buzzer.Â
Out of the half, the Scarlet Raiders looked like a different team. In three minutes, they erased the seven-point deficit and took a one-point lead when Rutherford hit a pair of three's sandwiched around a
Dante Ralph layup. Rutherford couldn't be stopped as he continued to punish the Scarlet Raptors from behind the arc and was able to complete a four-point play to give his team a 39-36 lead with 15:00 minutes remaining in the game.
The Scarlet Raiders further increased their lead over a three-minute span which put them up 46-39. Rutgers-Newark's nationally-ranked defense was on full display in the second half as Rutgers-Camden's offense began to stall.
Tyrone Bowens played well inside the painted area and tallied six points before he fouled out of the game with 10:58 remaining.Â
Rutherford electrified the crowd when he threw down a one-handed tomahawk slam and followed it up with a deep three-point basket to extend their lead. The Scarlet Raiders defense continued to force turnovers and bad shots while converting open shots at the other end and with 3:07 left in the game they had a 64-48 lead.
Jordan Salisbury's effort this evening won't show up in the stat sheet, however, his defensive play was the starting point for the Scarlet Raiders' turnaround. With full momentum on their side, the Scarlet Raiders picked cruised to victory to stay in third in the NJAC standings.
