WAYNE, NJ | Rutgers University-Newark put the pressure on William Paterson this evening, taking 12 shots, however, were unable to find the back of the net as William Paterson scored a late goal to take the game 1-0. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 7-4-2, 1-4-1 while the Pioneers improve to 5-6, 2-4.
The Scarlet Raiders held the Pioneer to just three shots but all three shots forced Katie McLaughlin to parry two of them away from harm. Mariana Valencia tallied the most shots for her team coming off of the bench with four while Ana Silveira and Tamia Howell each added a pair of shots.
Both the Pioneers and the Scarlet Raiders stepped on the pitch tonight needing three New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) points to stay in the NJAC playoff hunt. Despite outplaying the Pioneers, the Scarlet Raiders saw themselves leave Wayne, NJ without any points.
With just 15 minutes to go in the game, the Pioneers cracked the code and hit a shot past McLaughlin. Julia Fiorito took the pass from Isabel Fernandez and redirected into the net to give her squad a 1-0 lead.
Rutgers-Newark cranked up the offensive firepower in the final 15 minutes, registering five shots, two of which forced a save from the keeper. Valencia nearly leveled the game at one with five minutes left but saw her shot bounce off of the woodwork and away from harm. The Pioneers parked the bus to make sure the Scarlet Raiders didn't threaten again.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, October 16 when they host Stockton University at 7:30 pm for another NJAC contest.
