Rivera & Maynor Unable To Power #RUNWVB Past William Paterson

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match tonight against William Paterson, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-19). With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders have been eliminated from NJAC Postseason contention.

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders hit .059 with Alexa Rivera leading the way with 9 kills. Kaiel Maynor finished with seven kills and Sharon Starling finished with 10 assists. Rivera also topped the team with 16 digs and four service aces.

In the first set, the Scarlet Raiders held a 12-9 lead but ultimately surrendered it when William Paterson went on a 4-1 run to knot it up at 13.  The Scarlet Raiders would regain control of the match with Rebekah Barnes' kill, giving her team a 23-20 lead. The Pioneers dug their feet in and scored four unanswered to tie the game up at 24 before scoring the final two points to steal the opening set from the Scarlet Raiders.

William Paterson used the momentum from the first set to burst the set open towards the end. With a three-point lead, the Pioneers stifled the Scarlet Raiders' offense and went on a 7-2 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Scarlet Raiders and Pioneers traded blows for the majority of the third set until the end. Once again the Scarlet Raiders' offense went cold at the end of the set which allowed the Pioneers to go on a 7-1 run to punch their ticket to the NJAC Tournament.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday, October 21 when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Brooklyn College at 6:00 pm.
