CAMDEN, NJ | Maria Miranda kept the women's soccer New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament hopes alive this afternoon after she scored the game winner in extra time to topple Rutgers University-Camden 2-1.
Rutgers University-Newark (9-4-3, 2-4-2) took 11 shots today with six finding the mark while Rutgers University-Camden (5-8-2, 3-4-1) tallied 14 shots with 10 hitting the frame. The Scarlet Raiders held a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Tamia Howell and Ana Silveira tested Kayla McKeever with a pair of shots before the Scarlet Raiders opened up the scoring for the game. Howell and Silveira used quick passes to find Bailey Kellenberger open inside the box. Kellenberger received the low cross and easily tapped it into the back of the net to put her squad up 1-0 in the 23rd minute. Rutgers-Camden continued to pepper Katie McLaughlin with shots, however, they were unable to crack the code despite taking 11 shots.
In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders were the aggressors with five shots compared to just three for the Scarlet Raptors. However, it was Rutgers-Camden that leveled play in the 79th minute when they snuck a shot into the left panel, past McLauglin.
The Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on in extra time and it would pay dividends seven minutes in. Kellenberger found Miranda in the box with a low cross which allowed Miranda to redirect the pass into the left net for the game winner.
Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is a home date with Montclair University on Wednesday, October 27 at 7:30 pm.
