Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Rutgers-Newark Athletic Communications

Late Push By #RUNWSOC Stifled By Kean's Defense

NEWARK, NJ | Despite playing well, the Scarlet Raiders women's soccer program was unable to overcome an early goal by Kean and dropped a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game, 1-0, at Frederick Douglass Field. The Scarlet Raiders dropped to 7-3-2, 1-3-1 while Kean improved to 4-5-2, 2-2-1.

The Scarlet Raiders dominated the offensive end, firing off 12 shots, putting 9 on target while holding Kean to just five shots with two finding their mark. Rutgers-Newark also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks while getting called for 14 fouls to just five for the Cougars.

Kean University used an early goal, just 1:02 into the game, to secure the win. Jenna Sheedy was able to break free in the box and use a pass from Vanessa Leon to hit a shot past Katie McLaughlin

After settling into the game, the Scarlet Raiders put the pressure on Kean's defensive unit and sent wave after wave of attacks at them. Kean was up to the task, however, as they repelled each attack the Scarlet Raiders sent their way.

The Scarlet Raiders had chances to find the back of the net in the second half but the ball didn't bounce their way. With 11 minutes remaining, Bailey Kellenberger sent a corner kick into the box and found the head of Maria Miranda who bounced it off of the turf and into the net only to have it whistled off by a foul. Rutgers-Newark wasn't done threatening, however, as Miranda, with 1:33 remaining, seemingly found the goal to even it out. Miranda chipped the ball over the keeper only to have it cleared off of the line by a defender, preventing the goal.

Kean would gather the ball and send it into Rutgers-Newark's defensive half and watched as the clock went to zero.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, October 13 when they travel to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson at 7:30 pm.
