Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Tom Krychkowski

WBB Suffers First Loss in Thriller Against William Paterson, 67-66

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team had their hearts broken in the final moments of tonight's game against William Paterson University. The Pioneers hit a shot with just three seconds left to push them ahead by one as the Scarlet Raiders were unable to fire off an open shot. The Scarlet Raiders dropped their first contest of the season, 67-66.

Syncere Lambert had a career night despite the loss, pouring in 28 points on 9-of-17 (52.9%) shooting from the floor. Lambert had an all-expenses-paid trip to the charity stripe tonight as she went 7-for-11 from the line. Samiyah Horton added 17 points while Ebony Odom Barnes just missed her third consecutive double-double with a 9-point, 11-rebound outing. Madison Diaz made the most of her time on the hardwood tonight as she came up with a huge block down the stretch and also grabbed three rebounds in six minutes of action.

The Pioneers had three players in double figures with Brianna Brooks leading the charge with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Justina Cabezas also tallied a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Yakira Rosa tallied 10 points and tied the lead with four assists.

Rutgers University-Newark (2-1, 2-1 NJAC) held the lead with 31 ticks remaining on the clock after Lambert made an acrobatic scoop layup to give her team the lead. She would head to the line after the layup and miss the and-one attempt which set up the Pioneers for a last-second jumper.

The game score looked much different at half as the Pioneers held a 39-31 lead headed into the locker room and seemed to have full control of the game as they were dominating the paint. Head coach Ashley Cieplicki, however, made a crucial tactical change at the half which nearly proved to be the perfect gameplan.

William Paterson University (1-2, 1-2 NJAC) earned their first win of the season after a mid-range jumper by Brianna Brooks found the bottom of the net with just three seconds remaining. The Pioneers struggled from behind the arc tonight, shooting just 3-of-17 (17.6%). As a team, they shot 34.8% from the field and held a 34-24 edge in points in the paint, which is where they made their living for the better part of the first half.

Lambert's 28-point performance tonight was the highest scoring total since Maria Simmons did it during the 2016-17 season where she scored 37 points against William Paterson University.

Lambert had a chance to increase that total at the end of the game as her number was called in the timeout to take the final shot. The play was drawn up and Lambert got her hands on the ball but was forced to take a contested shot that fell short of the mark. After finding themselves on the good end of a buzzer-beater earlier this season the Scarlet Raiders were stung tonight as they suffered the same fate they dealt out just one week ago.

Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team returns to the court tomorrow night as they will look to return to the win column in Wayne, NJ as they take on William Paterson at 2:00 p.m.
