MBB Nearly Completes Comeback vs Montclair; Falls 57-56

MONTCLAIR, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball squad scored 34 points in the second half and nearly overcame a 9-point half time deficit, however, a last-ditch effort by Mike Vick fell short as the Scarlet Raiders fell, 57-56.

Rutgers University-Newark (2-1, 2-1 NJAC) suffered their first loss of the season after a week hiatus from the hardwood. Quincy Rutherford led the team with 16 points followed up by 12 by Jamir Patterson. Vick led the squad with eight rebounds while adding 9 points to his scoresheet. As a team, the Scarlet Raiders shot 40% from the floor and 41.7% from behind the arc.

Montclair State University (4-1, 4-1 NJAC) had four players record double-digit points with Irving Callender IV leading the way with 13. Scoring 10 points each was Devin Cooper, Myles Mitchell-White, and Keyon Pryce. Malachi Smythe grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the win.

The Scarlet Raiders erased a 9-point deficit just 10 minutes into the second half when Patterson cashed in from range to knot the game up at 40. Dante Ralph pushed Rutgers-Newark ahead by three with 4:31 remaining before a pair of free-throws and a jumper gave the Red Hawks the lead once again.

The pair of free-throws by Kieran Flanagan ignited a 7-0 run for Montclair which spanned two minutes. A timeout was called by the Scarlet Raiders with 1:17 remaining to cool off the Red Hawks and allow the Scarlet Raiders to regroup. The timeout seemed effective as with 20 ticks remaining on the board, Vick brought the Scarlet Raiders within a pair after hitting a shot from range.

A quick foul by Rutherford sent Irving Callender IV to the line where he gave his team a four-point lead by converting both from the charity stripe.  The Scarlet Raiders didn't throw their final punch yet as with one second remaining, Rutherford hit a three to bring his team within one before Abe Kromah fouled to send the Red Hawks to the line once more.

Keyon Pryce would go on to miss both attempts which allowed Vick to heave a 3/4 court shot that missed the mark and prevented the Scarlet Raiders from completing the magical comeback.

The Scarlet Raiders return to the court tomorrow afternoon against Montclair University once more at 2:00 p.m.
