UNION, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team suffered their third defeat of the season tonight when they fell to the Cougars of Kean University, 87-48, at the Harwood Arena.
Rutgers University-Newark (2-3, 2-3 NJAC) was led by Ebony Odom Barnes on the stat sheet as she paced the squad with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Syncere Lambert added 9 points for the Scarlet Raiders while finishing with five rebounds. Samiyah Horton and Kellie Martinez finished with 7 and 8 points, respectively. The Scarlet Raiders shot just 26.6% from the floor tonight and 66.7% from the charity stripe.Â
Kean University (1-6, 1-6 NJAC) picked up their first win of the season tonight behind Shannon McCoy's 24 point, 10 rebound double-double. DarRique Smith and Olivia Nilsen each added 15 points in the win. Casey Filiault dished out a team-high five assists in the win. From the field the Cougars shot 39.7% and 90% from the free-throw line.Â
After one quarter of play, the Scarlet Raiders were within seven points of the Cougars. However, in the second quarter the game went fully in favor of Kean University. The Cougars tossed up an onslaught of three-pointers, 11-for-39 for the game, which gave them a game-high 26-point quarter. Rutgers University-Newark's offense went cold for the second quarter, a quarter in which ultimately defined the game.Â
Rutgers-Newark made a push after half time, scoring 16 points, however, the Cougars remained hot, adding another 25 points to their tally. The Scarlet Raiders committed 24 turnovers in the game which aided the Cougars offensive onslaught in the contest.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action tomorrow afternoon on Saturday, February 26 at 2:00 p.m. at The Golden Dome in Newark, NJ.Â
