Women's Basketball Brushes Aside Rutgers-Camden, 68-57, to Start 2-0

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders led wire-to-wire as Samiyah Horton and company followed up last night's dramatic win over Rutgers-Camden with another in as many days as they downed the Scarlet Raptors, 68-57.

Horton once again led the Scarlet Raiders in the scoring category, tallying 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the floor. Ebony Odom Barnes recorded her second straight double-double of the season, with 14 points and 10 rebounds (six offensive) while newcomer Kellie Martinez shot 4-for-8 from behind the arc and finished with 12 points.

Jalissa Pitts led the Scarlet Raptors with 23 points and 12 boards while Kylar Coughlin also tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Abigail Sampona added eight points and four rebounds for the Scarlet Raptors.

Rutgers University-Newark (2-0, 2-0 NJAC) starts 2-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season after an outstanding opening quarter where they outscored their opponents, 19-8 which set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Rutgers University-Camden (0-2, 0-2 NJAC) struggled to find their footing in the opening quarter of tonight's conference action which ultimately was their undoing as they were unable to climb out of the deep deficit.

After five minutes of play, the Scarlet Raiders scored 12 points and had an eight-point lead as they forced bad shots by the Scarlet Raptors which allowed the Scarlet Raiders to jump out to an 11-point lead by the end of the quarter.

Just when it seemed the Scarlet Raptors started to gain momentum, Martinez answered with a three on a pass from Eliana Huancaya to push the Scarlet Raiders back out by double-digits. However, the Scarlet Raptors made a push towards the end of the second stanza as they cut the deficit to six.

The Scarlet Raiders extended their lead once more to double-digits with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter and never relinquished that lead for the remainder of the game as they were able to keep the Scarlet Raptors at bay.

Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball returns to the hardwood on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7:00 p.m. when they host William Paterson University.
