Horton Hears a Buzzer Beater; RUN Downs RUC 65-63 at the Buzzer

CAMDEN, NJ | With five seconds left, the Scarlet Raptors knotted the game up at 63 before Samiyah Horton cashed in on a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Scarlet Raiders over the Scarlet Raptors, 65-63, in Camden, NJ.

Propelled by Horton's career-high 22 points, Rutgers University-Newark (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) picked up the win in hostile territory. Elisha India Cross and Syncere Lambert each contributed 14 points while Ebony Odom Barnes recorded a 14-point, 10-rebound, double-double. The 14 point outing for Lambert was also a career-high for her, beating her old mark of 12 points.

For the Scarlet Raptors, Tiazha Jackson paced the team with 25 points while Jalissa Pitts tallied 15 points and 11 rebounds. Joining Pitts in the double-digit rebound column was Kylar Coughlan who also added 11 boards.

The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a seven-point lead to start the opening stanza on the back of five straight points from Lambert. However, the Scarlet Raptors chipped away at that lead and by the end of the first quarter saw themselves down just a pair.

With momentum fully on their side, the Scarlet Raptors took the lead three minutes in the second quarter and then used a 15-1 run that spanned three minutes to push their lead out to 14.

After a scoring outburst in the opening moments of the third quarter, the Scarlet Raiders went cold and saw them fall behind by 14 once again. Down 16 to start the fourth the Scarlet Raptors held a 16-point lead the Scarlet Raiders knew what they had to do and executed it perfectly. They tightened up their defense and went on a 23-5 run to give them a 63-61 lead with just 14 ticks remaining.

Jackson leveled the game with five seconds left for the Scarlet Raptors before Horton played hero and put her shot through the hoop before the buzzer to give her team the win over their southern foes.

Rutgers University-Newark returns home tomorrow night, Saturday, Feb. 6 at 7:00 p.m. as they look to complete the season sweep of the Scarlet Raptors.
