NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers University-Newark's offense stalled against the Stockton Osprey's tonight in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Quarterfinal. The Scarlet Raiders fell 67-45 at the Golden Dome on senior night.
Before the game, Mike Vick was honored with a frame to commemorate his tenure with the Scarlet Raiders. During halftime, you got to learn more about both Mike Vick and Darris Watkins with a video on RaiderVision of them explaining their favorite moments as a Scarlet Raider.
#4 Rutgers University-Newark (2-3, 2-2 NJAC) was led by Quincy Rutherford's 15 points while Dante Ralph added a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double in the loss. Jordan Salisbury paced the team with three dimes. Vick finished the game with two points and six rebounds before exiting the game early with an apparent injury. Jamir Patterson added 8 points and led the squad with a pair of blocks.Â
#5 Stockton University (4-3, 3-3 NJAC) had a trio score double-digits tonight led by Luciano Lubrano's 16. DJ Campbell scored 15 while Tariq Baker added 13. Kyion Flander led the Ospreys with six rebounds while adding three assists.
Points came at a premium in the first half for both squads as defense was the focus. Despite the tough defense and limited second-chance opportunities, the Ospreys shot a respectable 41.4% from the field led by DJ Campbell's eight points on 50% shooting. Rutherford led the Scarlet Raiders offense with 10 points in the opening half while Ralph took advantage inside and collected six.Â
The Scarlet Raiders started off strong and held a 10-9 lead through the first eight minutes. However, as the half progressed, the Scarlet Raiders began to get cold as they ended the half shooting 28.1%. Trailing 24-19 with 2:58 remaining, Ralph corralled his own miss and placed it off of the glass to cut the lead down to three. Rutherford cut the deficit down to one on the back end of a pair of free-throws however, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to find the bottom of the net for the remainder of the half as the Ospreys went on to score seven unanswered to take an eight-point lead into the locker room.
Both teams came out swinging out of the break and the Scarlet Raiders were able to cut the lead down to four after Vick cashed in on a layup. With 14:03 remaining, the Scarlet Raiders trailed by eight but the Stockton offense began to heat up. The Ospreys answered with a 10-0 run that spanned four minutes while Rutgers-Newark's offense stalled.
With 10:04 remaining the Scarlet Raiders were down 18 points and were only able to bring it down to 16 as Stockton's defense suffocated the Scarlet Raiders' offense. Stockton's offense kept flowing as they continued to crack the code against Rutgers-Newark's defense which pushed their lead out to 24 points.
The 24-point deficit was too much for the Scarlet Raiders to overcome down the stretch as they would go on to be knocked out of the NJAC Championship Tournament.Â
The Scarlet Raiders will re-load for next season and hope for a normalized season where they can build off of what they started this year.Â
