#RUNSB Drops Twin Bill To #8 Kean, 9-0, 6-4

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball squad hosted #8 Kean University this afternoon at Frederick Douglass field where they fell 9-0 (5inn.) and 6-4.

Game 1: #8 Kean University 9, Rutgers-Newark 0 (5inn.)

Rutgers University-Newark (0-7, 0-7 NJAC) received a pair of hits from Jackie Lara who finished the game 2-for-3 while four other Scarlet Raiders each tallied a hit in the opener. Paige Masiello (0-3) hurled 5.0 innings and allowed 11 hits and 8 earned runs with a strikeout and four walks on 98 pitches.

Kean University (13-2, 3-2 NJAC) had three members tally two hits in the win. Paige Metz finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI while Sarah Zengel went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Taryn DiGiacomo (7-1) pitched three scoreless innings and struck out four while allowing four hits.

The Cougars did most of their damage in the opening stanza, scoring six runs which set the tempo for the remainder of the game. Masiello started strong with a strikeout of Metz, however, DiGiacomo followed that with an inside the park home run to right field which ignited the Cougars' scoring spree. A pair of walks followed by a single set up Zengel to hit a 2 RBI single to further increase the lead. After batting around, Metz singled to right field to cap the scoring for the inning with two runs crossing the dish.

Rutgers-Newark looked primed to answer after Jaclyn Arute singled to the pitcher to start the bottom of the first. Lara and Megan Tomaselli both singled to left field to load the bases with just one out on the board. With the bases loaded, Michelle McMillan and Patricia Frech-Reyes were sent back to the bench to leave three runners stranded on the bases.

Kean scored three more runs in the game as the Scarlet Raiders were unable to threaten for the remainder of the game.

Game 2: #8 Kean University 6, Rutgers-Newark 4

Rutgers University-Newark (0-8, 0-8 NJAC) fared better in game two as they scattered seven hits and scored four runs. Arute finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a double and crossed home once. Lauren Hernandez (1-for-3) recorded the hit that cleared the bases and scored a trio of runs for her squad. Jackie Lara (0-3) pitched 7.0 innings and struck out five batters and allowed six earned runs on 11 hits.

Kean University (14-2, 4-2 NJAC) was led by Maddie Carlson who went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and a run for her team. Annabella Marino (1-0) came in for relief of Karly Messina and picked up her first of the season in 4.0 innings of action. Heather Clevenger picked up the save after coming in in the bottom of the 7th to strike out a batter and force both a ground out and a flyout to end the game.

The Scarlet Raiders were first on the board in game two after Arute set her team up on the right trajectory with a leadoff triple to center field, just coming up short of a lead-off home run. Lara then helped her own cause and doubled to left-center to allow Arute to cross and give the Scarlet Raiders a 1-0 lead.

Once again most of the scoring for the Cougars came in one inning. In the top of the 3rd the flood gates opened and Kean scored five runs to take a 5-1 lead at Frederick Douglass field.

Rutgers-Newark wouldn't go down without a fight, which is something they've shown all season, however, they just come up a run or two short. In the bottom of the 6th with bases loaded and two outs, Lauren Hernandez singled just outside the reach of the infield which allowed all three base runners to cross the plate to give the Scarlet Raiders a fighting chance.

The defense did their job for the Scarlet Raiders and held the Cougars scoreless in the top of the 7th to set up a chance for the Scarlet Raiders to win. However, the Scarlet Raiders' bats once again went cold as they went down in order to hand Kean the victory.

Rutgers University-Newark returns to action on Saturday, April 17 where they will cross the river to take on New Jersey City University at 1:00 pm.
