Softball Sweeps NJCU For First Wins Of The Season

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball program needed just two runs in game one against New Jersey City University to earn their first win of the season before blanking the Gothic Knights, 5-0, in game two at Frederick Douglass Field.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 2, NJCU 1

Rutgers University-Newark (1-8, 1-8 NJAC) tallied six hits and scored a pair of runs in the opener to secure their first win of the season. Jackie Lara (1-3) was efficient at the plate and in the circle for the Scarlet Raiders. Lara finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and threw 90 pitches in 7.0 innings with six strikeouts. Alex Di Martino was perfect from the dish in game one and finished 3-for-3 with a run scored.

New Jersey City University (0-9, 0-9 NJAC) recorded three errors and three hits in the loss and was led by Miller to finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dabbadie (0-3) tossed 86 pitches and tallied one strikeout in the loss.

The game opened with both teams remaining scoreless for the first two innings. Di Martino opened the ledger with a triple to left field before scoring on a wild pitch to give her team a 1-0 lead over their rivals from across the river.

A wild pitch would bring home another Scarlet Raider in the next inning as Lara doubled to left field before Megan Tomaselli moved her over to third with a single through the left side. Lara was vigilant on third as another wild pitch would allow her to score to double the Scarlet Raiders' lead.

NJCU, for the first time this season, didn't have a game end in five innings due to the mercy rule as they would score in the bottom of the 5th. Miller doubled to left-center to score Ruiz who pinch ran for Herrick.

The final pair of innings would remain scoreless as hits came at a premium.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 5, NJCU 0

Rutgers University-Newark (2-8, 2-8 NJAC) got their bats going in game two and recorded 13 hits and scored five runs. Jaclyn Arute went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs in game two and now just needs three hits to reach 100 career hits while Lara's bat remained hot as she finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Di Martino led the team with 2 RBI. Paige Masiello (1-3) earned her first win of the season with a 77 pitch shutout.

New Jersey City University (0-10, 0-10 NJAC) tallied just four hits in game two with Loughlin leading the way as she went 2-for-2. Miller (0-2) tossed 100 pitches in the loss and walked five batters and allowed 13 hits.

The Scarlet Raiders found success early and put a run on the board in the top of the 1st when Lara singled up the middle which brought Arute home who earlier reached on a single through the right side.

Rutgers-Newark added a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd when Di Martino hit a 2 RBI single to third base which scored Brianna Hernandez and Lara.

In the top of the 6th Arute hit a lead-off triple, much like she's done all season, before Masha Corbett hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Arute from third. Tomaselli hit an RBI single later in the inning to score Lara who singled to center field earlier on. '

The Scarlet Raiders will now return to action on Tuesday, April 20 when they travel to Mahwah, NJ to take on Ramapo College in another NJAC doubleheader.
