RUN Softball Drops A Pair Of Close Games To Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball program hit the road to take on Ramapo College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup this afternoon at the Athletic Center. The Scarlet Raiders dropped the pair of close games, 2-1, 7-5.

Game 1: Ramapo 2, Rutgers-Newark 1

Rutgers University-Newark (2-9, 2-9 NJAC) scattered five hits and scored a run in the loss. The Scarlet Raiders struggled in the field and committed three errors aiding the Roadrunners' scoring effort. Michelle McMillan finished the game 1-for-2 with a run while Alex Di Martino stayed in good form and went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Paige Masiello (1-4) hurled 6.2 innings and struck out six batters while allowing four hits.

Ramapo College (3-10, 3-8 NJAC) recorded four hits and tallied two fielding errors in the 2-1 win. Anna Messina went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI in the win while Thu Deo and Avery Bartolomeo scored a run each. Mahogany Wheeler (2-5) picked up 7 strikeouts on 84 pitches and allowed just one earned run.

A pitching duel ensued through the first five innings of play until the Scarlet Raiders cracked the code in the top of the 6th. With two outs already on the board and the inning looking bleak, McMillan singled up the middle before Di Martino singled to left center allowing McMillan to score from first. The inning wouldn't continue as Di Martino would get caught in a pickle and thrown out at second to end the inning.

Ramapo would threaten in the 6th, however, the Scarlet Raiders were able to slam the door shut temporarily.

The Scarlet Raiders' blunders came in the final inning of play as two of their three errors came in the crucial final inning of play, allowing the Roadrunners to steal an NJAC win from Rutgers-Newark.

Game 2: Ramapo 7, Rutgers-Newark 5

Rutgers University-Newark (2-10, 2-10 NJAC) scored five runs on five hits in game two and tallied just one error. Alex Di Martino collected another pair of RBI while Jackie Lara and Madison DiGiorgio finished 1-for-2. Lara (1-4) pitched 3.1 innings and allowed 9 hits and five earned runs while striking out four batters.

Ramapo College (4-10, 4-8 NJAC) got their bats going in game two as they tallied 13 hits. Carli Egan finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI while Mahogany Wheeler went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Megan Giesecke (2-6) walked 10 batters and struck out four but didn't allow a single hit.

Ramapo did most of their damage in the 4th inning as they scored six of their seven runs in that stanza before adding another to their tally in the 5th.

The Scarlet Raiders were able to score in the top of the 5th when both Di Martino and Brianna Hernandez scored on a walk. DiGiorgio picked up an RBI with a shallow single to right field to help cap the scoring for the Scarlet Raiders. McMillan picked up an RBI with a single to right field while Di Martino was tabbed with a fielder's choice RBI to pick up her second of the game.

Rutgers-Newark was unable to muster up any more runs in the top of the 7th as they would drop game two, 7-5.
