Arute Picks Up 100th Career Hit In Loss To TCNJ

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark fought valiantly against #19 The College of New Jersey, however, they were unable to muster up enough runs as they fell to the nationally-ranked Lions, 7-3, 8-0.

Game 1: #19 TCNJ 7, Rutgers-Newark 3

Rutgers University-Newark (2-13, 2-13 NJAC) accumulated seven hits in game one but committed four errors which would ultimately be their downfall. Jaclyn Arute finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and with her second hit of the game acquired the 100th hit of her career. Masha Corbett and Jackie Lara each finished with two hits, while Lara drove in all three runs for the Scarlet Raiders. Paige Masiello (1-6) pitched well in the circle and struck out three batters and allowed five earned runs.

The College of New Jersey (14-3, 13-2 NJAC) was led by Allie Immerso who finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a run scored while Jaclyn Carifi went 3-for-4. Eliza Sweet (5-2) hurled 3.2 innings and struck out three batters with just one earned run.

TCNJ was held to one run in the opening stanza before blowing the game open in the top of the third. The Scarlet Raiders were marked with three errors in that inning which allowed TCNJ to score five runs on five hits.

Rutgers-Newark would put their first tally on the board in the bottom of the third as Lara hit a sacrifice fly to right-center which brought home, Alex Di Martino. With just one out and two runners on the bases, the following batters would strikeout to end the inning and end the Scarlet Raiders' scoring opportunity.

After TCNJ added a run to their tally in the top of the seventh, the Scarlet Raiders put forth one of their patented comeback attempts. With two outs, Arute singled to right field and was followed by an infield single by Masha Corbett. Lara then cleared the bases with a triple to right field to cut the lead down to four. The Scarlet Raiders were unable to continue their rally as another strikeout would end the inning.

Game 2: #19 TCNJ 8, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers University-Newark (2-14, 2-14 NJAC) had a tougher outing in game two as they faced Alanna Namit who currently holds the 32nd best ERA in the country at 1.15. Megan Tomaselli tallied both hits for the Scarlet Raiders as she went 2-for-3 in the game. Jackie Lara (1-6) threw 141 pitches in 7.0 innings of action and allowed eight runs on 11 hits.

The College of New Jersey (15-3, 14-2 NJAC) used Namit to shut down the Scarlet Raiders in game two as she allowed just two hits in 7.0 innings with 12 strikeouts on 126 pitches. She also helped her own cause and went 2-for-4 from the dish with a home run and three RBI.

Lara was able to blank the Lions in the opening inning, however, the Lions would find their bats in the top of the second where they scored a pair of runs. From there, TCNJ went on to score in each inning except the sixth to finish the game with eight runs.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, May 1 when they travel to Camden, NJ to take on Rutgers University-Camden for their final doubleheader of the regular season.
