Softball Stumbles In Season Opener To William Paterson, 8-7, 5-0

WAYNE, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball squad hit the diamond for their first action of the season today when they took on William Paterson University in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action. The Scarlet Raiders were unable to complete the unbelievable comeback in game one, 8-7, before falling in game two, 5-0, to the Pioneers.

Game 1 - William Paterson 8, Rutgers University-Newark 7 (8inn.)

Rutgers University-Newark (0-1, 0-1 NJAC) was led by Masha Corbett at the plate and in the circle. Corbett went 2-for-4 in the game with 3 RBI and one run while hurling three innings with five strikeouts. Emily Bartus also went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI and a run scored while
Brianna Hernandez finished 1-for-1 with an RBI. Madison DiGiorgio came in for relief and tossed 4.2 innings and allowed three hits, two runs, and struck out one in the loss.

William Paterson (2-3, 1-0 NJAC) received a pair of RBIs from Anna Nunziato as she also went 2-for-3 from the dish with a run scored and a walk. Crystal Arendas finished 1-for-2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. In the circle, Gianna Mulato got the win with 1.2 innings pitched and one strikeout.

After being held scoreless for the first six innings, the Scarlet Raiders' bats came alive in the seventh. Trailing 7-0, Bartus started the scoring rally for her squad with an RBI double to left-center. Corbett followed that up with a 3 RBI double to right-center which cut the lead down to three. Hernandez rounded out the scoring for the Scarlet Raiders to knot the game up at 7 with an RBI single to right field which scored Yexenia Osorio.

With the game knotted at seven, the teams went into extra innings and that's where the flame fizzled out for the Scarlet Raiders. After expending all of their energy to complete the unbelievable comeback, they were unable to muster up any more runs in the eighth to overcome the Pioneers on their home field.

Game 2 - William Paterson 5, Rutgers University-Newark 0

Rutgers University-Newark (0-2, 0-2 NJAC) tallied just three hits in the second game after tallying 10 in the first. Corbett, Alex Di Martino, and Michelle McMillan all recorded a hit in game two. Paige Masiello went the distance in the circle and struck out three batters and allowed three earned runs.

William Paterson (3-3, 2-0 NJAC) received multi-hit games from both Samantha Martin and Carly McDaniel as they both went 2-for-3 from the dish. Jillian Bigos finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Martin also went the distance for the Pioneers and struck out seven batters and allowed just three hits in the shutout.

The Pioneers did all of their scoring in just two innings while the Scarlet Raiders were unable to find their hot bats from the seventh inning of game one. Di Martino gave the Scarlet Raiders hope in the opening inning with a double to right-center which pushed Jaclyn Arute over to third where they would both eventually be stranded. That would be the only scoring chance the Scarlet Raiders had the rest of the game as the rest of their hits landed their batter on first.

Rutgers University-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, April 6 when they host Montclair State University at Frederick Douglass field in an NJAC doubleheader that starts at 3:00 pm.
