Softball Comes Up Short Against Montclair, 3-1, 7-5

NEWARK, NJ | After falling in game one, 3-1, the Scarlet Raiders softball team gave the crowd a 10 inning thriller in game two, a game in which they came up just short, falling to Montclair, 7-5, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action at Frederick Douglass Field on Tuesday night.

Game 1: Montclair 3, Rutgers University-Newark 1

Rutgers University-Newark (0-3, 0-3 NJAC) had Jaclyn Arute go 2-for-4 from the dish with an RBI. Jackie Lara finished 2-for-3 from the plate while Michelle McMillan went a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk. In the circle, Paige Masiello allowed seven hits and struck out four batters before giving way to Masha Corbett. Corbett allowed three runs on two hits in one inning and dropped her record to 0-1 on the year.

Montclair State (2-1, 2-1 NJAC) had both Kayla Gallo and Alyssa Borozan record two hits while Danielle Sibilio tallied a team-high two RBI. Ali Cavallaro went the distance and hurled a complete game and allowed seven hits and one run with 12 strikeouts.

Game one started as a pitcher's duel with neither team able to put a run on the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth. Arute started the bottom of the fifth off with a triple to right-center to put her in scoring position before Corbett hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Arute across the dish.

A trio of changes at the top of the sixth put Corbett in the circle. Corbett was coming off of a good outing against the Pioneers, a game in which she had five strikeouts. The Red Hawks seemed to have had Corbett's number the entire inning as they would go on to score three decisive runs which would put Montclair in the driver's seat for the remainder of the game.

Arute once again started her comeback quest in the bottom of the seventh with a triple to right field but would once again be stranded. In total, the Scarlet Raiders would leave 9 batters on the bases in game one.

Game 2: Montclair 7, Rutgers University-Newark 5 (10 inn.)

Rutgers University-Newark (0-4, 0-4 NJAC) was once again paced by Arute who finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run. Lara joined in, going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI while Michelle McMillan and Emily Bartus each recorded multi-hit games. In the circle, Lara put forth a strong performance. Lara hurled 200 pitches in the 10 inning affair and struck out 12 batters and allowed three earned runs.

Montclair (3-1, 3-1 NJAC) had a strong showing from Alyssa Borozan in game two as she went 4-for-5 from the dish with 3 RBI and was the lone Red Hawk to record a multi-hit game in the second contest. Ali Cavallaro came in for relief of Kayla Volante and earned her second win of the day after throwing 3.1 innings with four strikeouts and just one earned run on four hits.

Montclair jumped out to a quick start, scoring two runs scattered across the first two innings which left the Scarlet Raiders playing catch up.

The Scarlet Raiders were up to the challenge as they've developed a knack for playing from behind and making dramatic comebacks. After Montclair scored their third run in the top of the seventh the Scarlet Raiders came alive at the plate and scored three runs to send the game into extra innings.

With two outs on the board and runners on first and second, the Scarlet Raiders had their backs against the wall when Bartus singled through the right side to load the bases. Arute, Mia Lopez, and Lara all recorded an RBI single to round out the scoring and sent the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless 8th inning, Montclair posted a pair to which the Scarlet Raiders promptly responded with a pair of their own. Arute tattooed a ball into center field and galloped over to second to score Patricia Frech-Reyes. Lara wouldn't leave Arute stranded as she helped her own cause with an RBI single down the left-field line to knot the game up at five.

The Red Hawks dealt the final blow in the top of the 10th with a pair of runs. When it was Rutgers-Newark's turn to bring out the bats, McMillan doubled to center field and Megan Tomaselli rounded third but was thrown out at home. With just one out and McMillan on third, the Scarlet Raiders looked primed to send the game into the 11th, however, their bats went cold as they were unable to create anymore runs.

Rutgers University-Newark returns to action on Saturday, April 10 when they travel down to Galloway, NJ to take on Stockton University in another
NJAC doubleheader.
