Men's Volleyball Falls In Five Set Thriller To Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, VA | The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball program fell behind 2-0 in the Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Semifinal before rallying back with two straight wins to send the match into a fifth set. There the Scarlet Raiders would fall to send Southern Virginia University to the CVC Championship to defend their title after their 3-2 (20-25, 13-25, 25-20, 25-20 5-15).

Rutgers University-Newark (8-5) was led by Andrew Zaleck's match-high 22 kills. Arvind Kumar finished second on the team with seven kills while Justin Tuohy paced the squad with 30 assists and six service aces. Defensively, NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, Matt Nikishin led the way with eight digs. Nicholas Arce-Cox forced Southern Virginia University to adjust their attacks, however, Arce-Cox was able to pick up four blocks in the match.

After falling behind 12-7 the Scarlet Raiders called a timeout to settle down and find their way back into the set. The timeout did just that as they cut the lead down to just one with a kill from Zaleck and a service ace from Tuohy. The Scarlet Raiders would lose steam which allowed Southern Virginia to extend their lead and take the first set.

Southern Virginia was dialed in in the second set and jumped out to a 15-4 lead before the Scarlet Raiders called a timeout. The timeout would not be as effective as in set one as Southern Virginia kept on rolling to take the second set 25-13.

The Scarlet Raiders came alive in the third set. Southern Virginia held a slight 11-9 lead before Rutgers-Newark went on a 6-1 run led by a trio of kills by Zaleck aided by a service ace from Kumar. With that run, the Scarlet Raiders had the momentum they needed to surge past Southern Virginia in the third set to stave off elimination. Southern Virginia did make a last-ditch effort to win in straight sets, however, the Scarlet Raiders remained resilient to take the set.

Rutgers University-Newark remained firm in the fourth set as they used a 9-2 to run during the middle of the set to extend their lead out over Southern Virginia to remain in the driver's seat. Daniel Quay helped keep the point tally climbing for the Scarlet Raiders as he secured a pair of kills during that run. Once again Southern Virginia wouldn't go quietly as they went on a 4-1 run that was too little too late which would then send the CVC Semifinal match into a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth set, Southern Virginia returned to their early match form and made sure to punch their ticket to the CVC Championship match with a 15-5 win. After a rally back-and-forth in the early goings of the final set, the Scarlet Raiders saw their offensive output stall as Southern Virginia's picked the pace up and scored 9 unanswered points to close out the match.

Rutgers University-Newark will now await to see if their season will continue in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
