#RUNBB Splits With NJCU In Final DH Of The Season

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball program squared off against NJAC rivals, New Jersey City University, in an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. NJCU took game one 6-5 while the Scarlet Raiders took game two, 13-8.

Game 1: NJCU 6, Rutgers-Newark 5

Rutgers University-Newark (1-16, 1-16 NJAC) scattered 11 hits and committed five errors in game one. Lisandro Ulerio finished 3-for-5 with a trio of RBI while Armando Alvarez, Robert Gonzalez, and Chris Suleski all tallied two hits. Colin Thompson (1-3) pitched 8.0 innings and allowed three earned runs with five strikeouts in the loss.

NJCU (5-23, 3-14 NJAC) was efficient in game one and scored six runs on six hits. Leslie went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs while Moreno went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI. J. Pudder (1-3) picked up the win in game one after he came in for relief for Niland.

The Scarlet Raiders were first on the board when Ulerio hit a lead-off single to center field. Alvarez then doubled to right field which scored Ulerio to give Rutgers-Newark the early lead.

Rutgers-Newark would double up on their lead in the top of the 4th when Suleski hit a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Andre Tirso who earlier reached on a fielding error by the shortstop.

The Gothic Knights would add their first marker to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th to cut the lead in half.

Making a habit of rallying on two outs, the Scarlet Raiders scored three runs in the top of the 6th to push their lead out to 5-1. Robert Gonzalez and Suleski both singled to get on base before Masino walked to load the bases. In the top spot, Ulerio made the most of his at-bat and hit a 3 RBI double down the left-field line to clear the bases and put the Scarlet Raiders in the pole position.

Things went downhill for the Scarlet Raiders in the bottom of the 7th. A pair of errors would allow NJCU to extend the inning and cross four runs to knot the game up at five.

NJCU won in nearly walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 8th with a solo homer by Leslie which put the Gothic Knights ahead for the first time and would wind up being the only run they needed for the rest of the game to secure a much needed NJAC win.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 13, NJCU 8

Rutgers University-Newark (2-16, 2-16 NJAC) secured 16 hits and scored 13 runs in their second win of the season. Ulerio kept his hot bat alive in the second contest and finished 3-for-5 with 4 RBI. Alvarez followed suit and went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI in the win. Malcolm Gilchrist (1-2) earned his first win of the season after hurling 3.2 innings of action in which he struck out four batters.

New Jersey City University (5-24, 3-15 NJAC) tallied 10 hits and scored 8 runs but committed 9 errors in the loss. Three Gothic Knights tallied three hits and 2 RBIs. Macfarlan (0-1) pitched 3.1 innings and struck out just one batter.

The Gothic Knights took a 2-0 lead in the first two innings before Rutgers-Newark cut the lead in half in the top of the 3rd. Ulerio hit a sacrifice fly to left field which allowed Ryan Lebow to score.

NJCU answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd to push their lead out to 4-1. In the top of the 4th, the Scarlet Raiders capitalized on five errors to score five runs and take a 6-5 lead.

From there, the Scarlet Raiders continued to find the gaps and added seven more runs to their ledger to pick up their second win of the season.

The Scarlet Raiders will now enter the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament which starts on Tuesday.
