EWING, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer program had their undefeated season come to an end this afternoon in their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest of the season. The women dropped the game 4-0 to #2 The College of New Jersey which ended their five-game win streak which was the best start in program history.
Tamia Howell fired off three of the Scarlet Raiders' seven shots and put one of her attempts on target. Reigning NJAC Rookie of the Week, Katie McLaughlin faced her toughest task of the season between the pipes against the Lions. For the first time in her young career, McLaughlin allowed a goal after tallying two shutouts in her first two starts.
The College of New Jersey found their first goal of the game in the 18th minute. Sophie Vieira was awarded a penalty kick and placed it into the back of the net to give TCNJ a 1-0 lead over Rutgers-Newark. The Lions next pair of goals came within 10 minutes of each other after passes penetrated the brick wall that has been the Scarlet Raiders' defense this season.
As a team, the Scarlet Raiders took seven shots with two of them going on frame. After taking five shots in the first half, the Scarlet Raiders offense was bottled up in the second half and held to just two shots.
The women will look to rebound on Tuesday, September 21 when they travel to Bronxville, NY where they will take on Sarah Lawrence College.
