Heartbreak in Wayne as #RUNMBB Loses at the Buzzer

WAYNE, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball squad suffered their third New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss of the season via a buzzer-beater against William Paterson, 60-58.

Rutgers-Newark (11-6, 8-3) shot 46.7% from the floor and was led by Quincy Rutherford's 14 points. Dante Ralph and Jamir Patterson each added 13 while Abe Kromah contributed 11. The Scarlet Raiders were dominant in the painted area, outrebounding the Pioneers 36-23. 

William Paterson (9-7, 4-5) was led by Dominic Mignone's 21 points while Jadon Cepeda added 12 with a team-high four rebounds. 

The Scarlet Raiders led by as much as 10 in today's loss, however, the Pioneers chipped away throughout the first half to head into the break down just two. 

In the second half, Rutgers-Newark came out strong and a Ralph layup gave the Scarlet Raiders their largest lead of the game and brought momentum fully over to their side. William Paterson responded with a 9-0 run which brought them within just one. From that point on, neither team was able to pull far away from the other which set up the dramatic finish. 

With 28 seconds left, a pair of free throws by the Pioneers gave them a two-point lead. Ralph equalized with six ticks remaining on the scoreboard after pulling down an offensive rebound off of the Kromah miss. William Paterson came out of the timeout with a plan set in place and was able to get Adryan Lopez open for the game-winning jumper.
