Castillo Scores First Career Goal as #RUNWSOC Draw Rutgers-Camden

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against their counterparts from the south, Rutgers University-Camden. The draw moves the Scarlet Raiders to 6-8-2, 2-3-1 while the Scarlet Raptors move to 4-6-3, 3-1-2.

Rutgers-Camden was first to the scoreboard in tonight's NJAC contest, scoring in the 2nd minute. Emily Owens hit a low driven shot into the left corner to put the Scarlet Raptors up 1-0 at Frederick Douglass Field. That lead wouldn't last long as a corner kick was put into the box for the Scarlet Raiders that was put home by Maria Castillo to level the game just two minutes later. The goal by Castillo marks the first of her collegiate career.

After the explosive opening five minutes, the game slowed down as neither team could find the crucial pass to set their teammate free. With just over one minute remaining in the first half, Tamia Howell found herself alone in Camden's penalty area but had her pocket picked to keep the game level at 1-1. The Scarlet Raiders held a 6-5 edge in shots at the half, putting four on target.

The second half was a quiet one until the end. Both teams struggled to break free in the final third which held Rutgers-Camden to just four shots in the second half. The Scarlet Raiders' offense came alive in the final 10 minutes and put real pressure on the Scarlet Raptors' defensive unit. Rutgers-Newark had several opportunities to take the lead but all of their attempts were blocked or parried away from harm.
