#RUNWSOC Claims Highest Seed in Program History With 1-1 Draw Against NJCU

NEWARK, NJ | For the first time since 2017, the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team is back in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament with a 1-1 draw this evening against New Jersey City University (NJCU). With the draw they earned the 4th seed in the tournament, their highest seeding ever. Their 12 conference points sits second to only their 13 they recorded in 2014. With the draw, the Scarlet Raiders finished the regular season 7-8-4, 3-3-3 while NJCU finished 5-9-4, 1-7-1. Before the game, the Scarlet Raiders recognized their eight seniors (Julia Nephew, Rachel Bocage, Faith Davis, Hope Davis, Ava Dul, Camila Howard, Tamia Howell, Bailey Kellenberger) with commemorative pictures.

The Gothic Knights shocked the Scarlet Raiders in the first half, when Kim Brites slotted a through ball to Hailey Goncalves. Goncalves used her speed to break free and hit a low shot under the outstretched Katie McLaughlin. Riley Haggerty almost tied the game up but her shot bounced off of the crossbar and out of play. With an even 6-6 split of shots, the Gothic Knights went into the half with a 1-0 lead.

Mariana Valencia put the Scarlet Raiders on the scoreboard in the second half when she flew down the left flank and hit a low driven shot into the opposite corner. Valencia looked to have had another chance on goal, however, she was flagged offside. Leila Ettayebi made her first appearance since October 4 and instantly impacted the team. Ettayebi took two shots and put them both on target, nearly putting the Scarlet Raiders ahead. The Scarlet Raiders would hold onto the draw and grab hold of the #4 seed for the NJAC Tournament where they will host Rutgers-Camden on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
