#RUNWSOC Drops NJAC Contest to TCNJ, 5-0.

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer squad ran into an offensive juggernaut this evening in #15 The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and fell, 5-0. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 6-7-1, 2-2 while TCNJ improves to 10-1-1, 4-0. 

The Lions wasted no time taking the lead over the Scarlet Raiders, using their first shot to find the back of the net just two minutes into the game. Gianna Coppola uncorked a shot from 25 yards out to beat Katie McLaughlin high to take a 1-0 lead. 15 minutes in, Tamia Howell broke free and had a two-on-one with a TCNJ defender. Howell laid the ball off for Mariana Valencia who hit her shot wide.

TCNJ doubled their tally with 15 left in the opening half when Gianna Coppola hit a cross into the box where Vicotria D'Imperio hit a header into the left netting. The Lions, shortly after, nearly added a third, but McLaughlin was up to the task and stonewalled the TCNJ attacker. The Lions eventually found their third with a hard shot from 22 yards out by Coppola for her second of the game. 

Maria Castillo made an outstanding slide tackle to save a goal but shortly after TCNJ would score once again to take a 4-0 lead. TCNJ kept their foot on the gas and found the back of the net once more to go ahead 5-0 as the Scarlet Raiders struggled to stop the high-powered offense.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, October 12 when they take on Montclair.
