#8 Rutgers-Newark Men's Volleyball Defeats #11 Juniata Before Sweeping PSU-Altoona

HUNTINGDON, PA | The #8 Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball squad toppled #11 Juniata today on the road in five sets, 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 26-28, 25-22, 15-13) before sweeping Penn State-Altoona, 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-19). 

Match 1: #8 Rutgers-Newark (2-1, 1-0) 3, #11 Juniata (8-3, 0-1) 2

Andrew Zaleck led the team with 21 kills in the five-set thriller while Arvind Kumar wasn't far behind with 15 of his own. Daniel Quay manned the middle of the net and tallied 13 kills while Derek Au secured 50 assists. Matt Nikishin patrolled the backline and tied the lead with 9 digs.

The Scarlet Raiders went up against a buzz saw in Juniata in the opening set of the match. Juniata hit a blistering .500 to take a 1-0 lead in the match before the Scarlet Raiders bounced back with a .292 hit percentage in the second to even the match at one apiece. Up just one point in the second set, Kumar gave the Scarlet Raiders the push they needed with a kill to give his team a two-point lead before an attacking error gave the Scarlet Raiders the win.

Juniata rebounded in the third set with another solid hitting performance while the Scarlet Raiders hit sub .100. Rutgers-Newark kicked it up a notch in the fourth set with their backs against the wall. Once again it came down to the wire as Juniata made it a one-point set until a pair of attacking errors by Juniata set up a fifth and final set. 

Rutgers-Newark quickly jumped in front, 3-0, before Juniata caught their footing and started to gain momentum. The Scarlet Raiders, however, were too strong despite a four-point rally by Juniata at the end as Rutgers-Newark secured the 15-13 win.

Match 2: #8 Rutgers-Newark (3-1) 3, Penn State - Altoona (1-3) 0

Elan Dorkhman paced the squad in the second match of the day with 10 kills with Zaleck sitting in second with eight. Au, maintained setting duties and tallied 30 in the match. 

Rutgers-Newark came out strong against the Lions and hit .550 in the opening set to cruise to a 25-15 victory. The Scarlet Raiders kept that momentum going in the second set, hitting .444 as a squad. However, the Lions began to gain momentum as they had their best performance in the second set, hitting .304. 

The Scarlet Raiders would close out the third and final set with 12 kills and a .417 hit percentage to complete the sweep of Penn State - Altoona and finish the day 2-0 on the road.
