#RUNSB Stumbles in Final Pair of Games in South Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, SC | The Scarlet Raiders dropped their first game of the day against Mansfield, 3-0, before dropping the nightcap to Keystone, 9-7.

Game 1: Mansfield 3, Rutgers-Newark 0

Rutgers-Newark (2-4) recorded just two hits in the loss. Madison DiGiorgio and Riley Scuralli were the only batters for the Scarlet Raiders to come up with an offensive play. In the circle, Jackie Lara (1-2) pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts while allowing three runs.

Mansfield (3-5) scattered five hits and had two players record two hits each in Hannah Swartz and Kayla Vonstein. In the circle, Alexis Easling (1-3) picked up her first win of the season after registering eight strikeouts while allowing just two hits.

Neither team was able to get their offense going until later into the game as Mansfield scored all three of their runs in the top of the 6th. With two runners on for Mansfield, the Scarlet Raiders committed their first of two errors, allowing a runner to open their scoring ledger for the game and take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Mansfield received a 2 RBI double to further increase their lead over the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark put the ball into play in the bottom of the 6th, however, it went right at the Mansfield players for outs as they were unable to create the same opportunities as their opponents.

Game 2: Keystone 9, Rutgers-Newark 7

Rutgers-Newark (2-5) improved from their first game of the day and used 13 hits to score seven runs. Lara led the team, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Mia Lopez, Madison Umlauf, and Riley Scuralli all added two hits. Michelle Capizzano (1-2) got the nod in the circle and pitched 4.1 innings and tallied three strikeouts.

Keystone (4-2) picked up their third straight win after using 11 hits to tally 9 runs in the win. Offensively, Alyssa Booth and Brooke Staple led the way with both recording three hits. Courtney Cienki was lights out through five innings, recording 9 strikeouts and just three hits.

The Giants were first on the board with two runs in the top of the first thanks to a home run by Paige Mokych. Keystone added to their tally in the top of the third before plating two more in the top of the 5th.

Down 5-0, the Scarlet Raiders' bats came alive in the bottom of the 5th as Lara hit a 2 RBI double to center field followed by Megan Tomaselli and Miranda Sheppard's RBI single.

Keystone responded with four runs of their own, however, in the bottom of the 6th, the Scarlet Raiders remained hot at the plate and tallied three more runs. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep that momentum going in the bottom of the 7th as they ran out of steam and dropped their final game in South Carolina.
