Two No-No's Cruise #RUNSB Past Baruch

NEWARK, NJ | Jackie Lara and Michelle Capizzano each pitched a no-hitter against Baruch College this afternoon in their home opener. The Scarlet Raiders took down Baruch, 8-0, in five innings in game one before following that up with an 8-0 win in six innings in game two. With the pair of wins, the Scarlet Raiders improved to 4-5 overall while Baruch dropped to 6-6.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 8, Baruch 0 (5inn.)

NJAC Rookie of the Week, Madison Umlauf, led the Scarlet Raiders at the plate, finishing game one, 2-for-3 while Brianna Hernandez led the team with 2 RBIs with one hit in two at-bats. Jackie Lara (2-2) threw a no-hitter in game one with 12 strikeouts and one walk. 

The Scarlet Raiders got on the board early in the first inning, wasting no time entertaining the crowd in their home opener. Mia Lopez got the inning started with a lead-off single before Megan Tomaselli hit an RBI double to right-center to score Lopez. 

In the second, the Scarlet Raiders exploded for four runs further pushing their lead out to five. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hernandez hit a 2 RBI double followed by Lara scoring two runs after an error by the centerfielder. 

Rutgers-Newark added three more runs in the 4th and 5th inning after Lopez and Lara recorded RBIs in the 4th before another error in the 5th gave the Scarlet Raiders the run they needed to activate the run rule. 

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 8, Baruch 0 (6inn.)

Jackie Lara was a perfect 3-for-3 in game two with 2 RBIs while Megan Tomaselli finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Riley Scuralli was also perfect in game two, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs. As a team, the Scarlet Raiders scatters 11 hits and recorded just one error. In the circle, Michelle Capizzano (2-2) threw a six-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts. 

Once again, Rutgers-Newark put up a run in the first inning when Lara hit a solo homer over the left-field wall for her third homer of the season. In the second, Scuralli remained hot and hit an RBI double to right-center to score Alexis Claiborne who walked to start the inning. 

Capizzano continued to shut down Baruch's batters and after two scoreless innings, the Scarlet Raiders returned to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th. Lara collected her 4th home run of the season and second of the game when she hit the ball over the left-field wall again.

The Scarlet Raiders enabled the run-rule in the bottom of the 6th when they plated five runs. Scuralli got the scoring started by hitting an RBI triple to score Claiborne. Tomaselli then hit a 2 RBI double later in the inning after Lara was intentionally walked. Umlauf singled to right-center before Capizzano helped her own cause with an RBI single to close out the game and complete the sweep of Baruch.
