#RUNSB Splits Doubleheader With St. Joseph's Brooklyn

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball squad split its non-conference doubleheader against St. Joseph's - Brooklyn this afternoon, 6-3 and 9-0 (5 inn.).

Game 1: St. Joseph's - Brooklyn 6, Rutgers-Newark 3

Rutgers-Newark (4-6) scattered seven hits in game one led by Madison DiGiorgio's three. DiGiorgio finished 3-for-4 with a run scored while Jackie Lara helped her own cause and went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Brianna Hernandez and Megan Tomaselli each added an RBI. In the circle, Lara (2-3) hurled 6.2 innings and allowed five hits with five strikeouts.

St. Joseph's - Brooklyn (9-1) used five hits to score six runs led by Ashleigh Heinsch and Bella Gomez. In the circle, Autumn Poppett (4-0) remained unbeaten after hurling 7.0 innings with four strikeouts.

The Bears exploded for four runs in the top of the 2nd after a walk scored the opening run followed by a 3 RBI triple by Gomez. Down 4-0, the Scarlet Raiders answered with a run in the bottom of the 2nd when Hernandez walked to score DiGiorgio.

Rutgers-Newark cut the lead down to one in the bottom of the 4th when Lara hit an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly by Tomaselli to cut the lead down to 4-3. The Scarlet Raiders bats fell dormant the following three innings while the Bears added another pair to secure the opening game of the doubleheader.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 9, St. Joseph's Brooklyn 0 (5 inn.)

In game two, the Scarlet Raiders (5-6) made better use of their seven hits as they plated 9 runs to activate the run rule. Rutgers-Newark had seven different batters record a hit with Mia Lopez leading the way with 2 RBIs. Alex Di Martino, Hernandez, Lara, Michelle Capizzano, and Riley Scuralli recorded the other RBIs. In the circle, Capizzano (3-2) pitched five clean innings with seven strikeouts to pick up her third win of the season.

St. Joseph's Brooklyn struggled to find a run in the second game despite recording the same amount of hits as game one. Brianna Kilimet allowed five runs with three strikeouts in the loss.

Rutgers-Newark left just four runners on in game two as they continued to find ways to bring them home. Lara got it started in the first with a sacrifice fly to score Di Martino.

Up 1-0, Rutgers-Newark became aggressive on the bases and tallied four more runs in the bottom of the second. After battling at the plate, Lopez walked in a run before Capizzano took advantage of a passed ball to add another tally for the Scarlet Raiders. Two more runs crossed the dish in that inning due to a wild pitch and a dropped third strike to increase their lead to 5-0.

In the very next innings, the Scarlet Raiders poured on four more runs to secure their 5th win of the season.
