#RUNSB Splits NJAC Doubleheader Against Montclair

MONTCLAIR, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball team split their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener with Montclair this afternoon, 4-3 and 9-3. The win in game one was just the third win in program history over the Red Hawks.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 4, Montclair 3

Rutgers-Newark (6-6, 1-0) used six hits to plate four runs in their win over Montclair in game one. Michelle McMillan and Riley Scurallie paced the Scarlet Raiders with two hits each, as McMillan and Megan Tomaselli each tallied an RBI. Jackie Lara (3-3) evened her record from in the circle today tossing seven innings with 9 strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs.

Montclair (16-6, 0-1) was held to just four hits and was led by Cosentino who went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. In the circle, Cavallaro (9-4) struck out 10 batters and allowed six hits and three earned runs.

Rutgers-Newark was first on the scoreboard when Lara reached first on a throwing error which allowed McMillan to cross the dish. Montclair responded with two runs in the bottom of the same inning to hop into the driver's seat.

Behind 2-1, Rutgers-Newark plated two runs in the top of the 5th when Alex Di Martino sparked the offense with a lead-off single which eventually led to the bases being loaded. Di Martino went on to score on a wild pitch after her hit earlier in the inning helped her extend her hit streak to four straight games. Tomaselli singled through the left side to score McMillan which put Rutgers-Newark ahead.

The Red Hawks answered with a run to tie the game up before the Scarlet Raiders scored what would be the game-winning run in the top of the 6th. Scuralli reached first via a single up the middle before McMillan hit an RBI double down the left field line to bring Scuralli home.

Lara would go on to blank the Red Hawks to secure the win.

Game 2: Montclair 9, Rutgers-Newark 3

Rutgers-Newark (6-7, 1-1) recorded seven hits in the second game with three batters recording two hits. Di Martino extended her hit streak to five-straight games after going 2-for-3 while Lara also went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Michelle Capizzano (3-3) pitched five innings and allowed 9 hits with five earned runs and one strikeout.

Montclair (17-6, 1-1) was led by Sibilio who tallied three hits in four at-bats while three other batters recorded two RBIs each. In the circle, Volante (8-1) allowed seven hits and struck out four batters en route to their 9-3 win.

Each team tallied three runs in the first inning, however, Montclair kept the scoring going after the Scarlet Raiders' bats went dormant. Lara's 2 RBI double through the right side brought the first two runs home for the Scarlet Raiders before Lara went on to score via an error.

Rutgers-Newark were unable to get their bats going the rest of the game as Montclair prevented the sweep in game two with the 9-3 win.
