Destination: Homerun City; Lara Tallies 2 Homers Alongside a Lopez Grandslam as #RUNSB Sweeps NJCU

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball team took down New Jersey City University (NJCU), 7-5, in game one before activating the run-rule in game two, 10-1, to sweep their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 7, NJCU 5

Jackie Lara helped her own cause in game one as the Scarlet Raiders (7-7, 2-1) used 10 hits to score seven runs while committing a pair of errors in the win. Lara finished the game at the plate 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and a pair of runs scored while Megan Tomaselli finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Riley Scuralli also picked up two hits and a run in the win and was left on base three times. From the circle, Lara (4-3) was lights out after the first inning, recording 13 strikeouts and just four earned runs.

NJCU (9-11, 1-2) was led by Emily Tunney's 3 RBI inside the park home run in the lead inning but managed just one hit after that. Tunney hurled 10 innings from the circle and tallied 10 hits with three strikeouts.

The Gothic Knights jumped on the board early, scoring three runs in the top of the first before the Scarlet Raiders replied with two of their own. With Michelle McMillan back in the lineup, the Scarlet Raiders took advantage of her speed as Tomaselli hit an RBI single to plate McMillan. Rutgers-Newark doubled up on their tally when Madison Umlauf reached on a fielding error allowing Lara to cross home.

Rutgers-Newark tied the game up in the 2nd, using a lead-off triple by Alex Di Martino to do so. McMillan seized the opportunity as she hit a sacrifice fly to cf to send Di Martino screaming home to knot the game up at three. Another run in the 3rd put the Scarlet Raiders ahead for good as NJCU's late pair of runs were unable to close the gap.

The Scarlet Raiders did add three to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th when Lara hit her 5th home run of the season which also brought home McMillan and Scuralli.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 10, NJCU 1 (5 inn.)

The Scarlet Raiders (8-7, 3-1) put their hits to good use in game two, using eight hits to plate 10 runs thanks to a grand slam by Mia Lopez. Lopez finished game two 1-for-2 with 4 RBIs and a run scored. Leading the pack for the Scarlet Raiders was Michelle Capizzano who finished the game 3-for-3 with 2 RBI while Lara was a perfect 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a home run. From the circle, Capizzano (4-3) went the distance and tallied four strikeouts with just one earned run.

NJCU (9-12, 1-3) was held to two hits once again as Mariah Villanueva led the team, going 1-for-2 with an RBI.  In the circle, Sidnie Dabbadie (4-3) allowed 10 hits and struck out four batters.

The Scarlet Raiders once again scored in the opening stanza, using an RBI single by Capizzano to plate McMillan. Rutgers-Newark would go scoreless in the 2nd before exploding for five runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Capizzano once again helped her own cause, tallying her second RBI single of the game which loaded the bases and set up Lopez for her heroics. Lopez stepped to the plate and crushed the ball over the left-field wall for her first career grand slam to push the Scarlet Raiders' lead out to six.

In the very next inning, used four more runs to activate the run rule over NJCU. To do so, Lara hit her team-high 6th home run of the season to score herself and Brianna Hernandez. Yexenia Osorio would go on to be hit by a pitch later in the inning which scored another run before Scuralli brought home Capizzano.
