Rutgers-Newark Softball Drops a Pair to Kean University

UNION, NJ | Michelle Capizzano hit her first home run of the season, however, it wasn't enough to overcome Kean in today's New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader as they fell 8-4 and 4-1.

Game 1: Kean 8, Rutgers-Newark 4

Michelle Capizzano gave the Scarlet Raiders (10-11, 4-5) an electric start to the NJAC doubleheader. Capizzano hit a 3 RBI home run, her first of the season to finish 2-for-3 on the day. Joining Capizzano with multiple hits were Michelle McMillan and Jackie Lara. In the circle, Jackie Lara (5-6) pitched six innings and struck out five batters.

Kean (21-6, 7-2) scattered 9 hits with four batters recording two. Gabrielle Fredette, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and three runs scored. In the circle, Heather Clevenger (9-1) pitched six innings with four strikeouts.

The Scarlet Raiders put the pressure on the Cougars early with a three-run homer by Capizzano. Kean answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the stanza to cut their deficit down to a pair.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Kean took the lead with a three-run inning before going on to add four more to their tally in the 5th and 6th inning.

Game 2: Kean 4, Rutgers-Newark 1

The Scarlet Raiders (10-12, 4-6) scattered four hits with four different batters in game two. Alex Di Martino recorded the lone RBI for the team as Miranda Sheppard scored one run for Rutgers-Newark.

Kean (22-6, 8-2) was led by Paige Metz who finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI while Gabrielle Fredette finished 2-for-2.

Kean once again used a three-run inning to take the lead in the 2nd. The Scarlet Raiders finally got on the board in the top of the 5th when Miranda Sheppard hit a lead-off single to get on base. Following two ground outs, Di Martino continued her solid at-bat streak and brought Sheppard home with an infield single.

Rutgers-Newark was unable to replicate their offensive success in game two as Marino allowed just four hits with eight strikeouts.
