Women's Soccer Falls Short in Season Opener

SCHENECTADY, NY | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team opened their 2022 campaign on the road this afternoon against Union. After the final whistle blew, the Scarlet Raiders found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline.

The Scarlet Raiders (0-1) fired off just one less shot than Union (1-0), however, it was Union who made the most of their 12 shots, finding the back of the net on two occasions.

Tamia Howell entered the first shot of the 2022 season but net minder Abby Mitty parried it wide of goal to keep the Scarlet Raiders off of the board. Three minutes later, Union opened their scoring ledger for the season after converting a penalty kick to put them up 1-0. With today's game being the first for both teams, they opted to play a slower pace while trying to figure each other out as the shots were just 4-3 in favor of Union.

When the page turned to the second half, both offenses opened up and registered eight shots each. Seven minutes into the second stanza, Amanda Sgueglia doubled their tally off of a pass from Liz DiCecco, sneaking it just under the arm of Katie McLaughlin. Howell and Ava Dul responded by putting shots towards goal with both of them unable to find the back of the net.

The Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on but were unable to crack the code to unlock Union's defensive unit as they would go on to fall in their season opener.

Up next, the Scarlet Raiders will host Brooklyn College on Saturday before hosting Franklin & Marshall on Sunday all at Frederick Douglass Field.
