Valencia Records a Hat-Trick as #RUNWSOC Cruises Past Brooklyn, 9-1

NEWARK, NJ | Viviana Valencia netted a hat-trick in the 9-1 win over Brooklyn College this afternoon in their home opener at Frederick Douglass Field. The win over the Bulldogs marks the 5th straight win over their non-conference opponents. 

The Scarlet Raiders (1-1) continued the trend of not allowing more than one goal against Brooklyn (0-1) and have now outscored them 38-4 in the last five meetings. Rutgers-Newark's offense was flowing in the first half, rifling off 27 shots and six goals while holding Brooklyn without a shot. 

Opening the scoring ledger for the season was Ava Dul who found the back of the net 11 minutes into the match off of a pass from Tamia Howell. Just five minutes later, Howell found the back of the net on her own when Sara Ribeiro threaded her a pass inside the box. The Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on and went up 3-0 when Julia Nephew received a pass from Dul and was able to beat Angelina Vasta for the goal.

Valencia then catapulted herself atop the stat list when she scored three goals in 11 minutes to put Rutgers-Newark up 6-0. 

In the second half, Rachel Gomez put Brooklyn on the board with a goal of her own. Ashley Gonzalez scored her first goal of the season in the 67th minute before Leila Ettayebi recorded a brace in a four-minute span to close out the scoring for the day.

The Scarlet Raiders Return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Franklin & Marshall at 4:00 pm at Frederick Douglass Field.
