Women's Soccer Falls to Franklin & Marshall, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team fell 3-0 to Franklin & Marshall this afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field to fall to 1-2 on the year while the Diplomats improved to 2-0.

Rutgers-Newark and Franklin & Marshall battled on the pitch for the opening 45 minutes with Rutgers-Newark tallying three shots to six for Franklin & Marshall. The chances for the Scarlet Raiders came early on, with Riley Haggerty missing right of the frame in the 14th minute. Tamia Howell received a pass from Bailey Kellenberger which broke her free in the box. Howell, with a defender to her right, just missed putting the Scarlet Raiders up in the early moments.

Franklin & Marshall began to crack the code to the defensive unit of the Scarlet Raiders late in the first half as Katie McLaughlin was called upon to stop a point-blank shot to keep the Diplomats off of the board. The Diplomats weren't done attacking as McLaughlin came up big once more, however, her deflection fell to the foot of Bri Skidmore who put another shot on net only to be stonewalled by Julia Iglesia

In the second half, the Diplomats came out with a purpose and found the back of the net three minutes into the half. Sierra Brophy took the pass from O'Callahan and beat McLaughlin with a shot to the far corner. Meg O'Callahan nearly doubled the lead after her shot bounced off of the crossbar. The attacks by the Diplomats became more ferocious as Brophy broke free in the box and scored a similar goal to her first to double their lead.

Rutgers-Newark almost cut the lead in half when they won a corner and Sara Ribeiro redirected the ball with her head just wide of the net. Kellenberger had an opportunity with a free kick at the top of the 18 but a big save by Emma Nolan kept the Scarlet Raiders off of the board.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in the game, Julia Nephew found herself open at the top of the box but sent her shot over the crossbar. Moments later, Ava Dul collected a loose ball in the box and after a few attempts, the ball would be cleared away for a corner kick and away from harm.

Brophy would go on to score a hat-trick with four minutes remaining to put her squad up 3-0 in the game.

The Scarlet Raiders were unable to break through Franklin & Marshall's defense as they would fall 3-0.
