Howell Scores in 4-1 Defeat to Arcadia

NEWARK, NJ | Tamia Howell collected the lone tally for the Scarlet Raiders as they fell to Arcadia, 4-1, on the opening day of the Brick City Classic. With the loss, Rutgers-Newark falls to 2-3 on the year while Arcadia improves to 1-3-1.

Arcadia was first on the board, scoring in the first five minutes to go up 1-0 over the hosts Scarlet Raiders. Taylor Gubler came flying down the left side of the field to beat the Rutgers-Newark defensive unit and slipped her shot under the outstretched leg of Katie McLaughlin. Rutgers-Newark nearly leveled the playing field in the 10th minute when Bailey Kellenberger found space on the right side of the box and sent a pass to Ava Dul who overran the pass.

The visitors nearly doubled their tally in the 23rd minute when Amanda Thaler bounced her shot off of the crossbar. Just moments later, Arcadia would have another opportunity but pushed the shot wide of the target. After more back-and-forth play, a free-kick from midfield was put into the box for Caroline Weirich who found the back post for her team's second tally of the game.

The Knights picked up where they left off in the first half and within the first minute they put a shot off of the crossbar. Arcadia wouldn't miss their next attempt as an errant ball found the head of Amanda Thaler who headed it past McLaughlin to put the Knights up 3-0. Weirich found herself on the scoresheet yet again when she corralled a loose ball and shot it through McLaughlin's legs for the game's 4th goal.

Camila Howard tried to recreate her stunning free-kick goal against John Jay but saw her attempt go high with 25 minutes remaining in the game. That seemed to spark the Scarlet Raiders' offense as they began to put pressure on Arcadia's defense. That pressure would pay dividends in the 72nd minute as Tamia Howell chipped Amelia Orr for their first tally of the game.

Rutgers-Newark was unable to continue adding to their tally as Arcadia's defense locked out any more attempts.
