Swarthmore Too Strong For #RUNWSOC as They Fall, 5-0

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss to undefeated Swarthmore this afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field as part of the Brick City Classic. With the win, Swarthmore was crowned Brick City Champions and improved to 5-0 while the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 2-4. 

Riley Haggerty, off of a pass from Ava Dul, nearly gave the Scarlet Raiders their first marker of the game against Swarthmore. Haggerty's shot would go too high, however, the Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on the Garnets as Tamia Howell forced Nora Greer to make a save. 

As the game wore on, Swarthmore began to send more attacks at the Scarlet Raiders but Katie McLaughlin was up for the challenge and made several saves to keep the Garnets off of the board. Swarthmore finally broke through in the final moments of the first half when Kim Kockenmeister won the ball and dribbled past the Scarlet Raiders' defenders for the opening goal of the game. 

In the second half, Swarthmore quickly added another to their tally to double their lead. With 36 minutes remaining, the Garnets struck again to take a 3-0 lead. The goals came in bunches for Swarthmore as they found the back of the net once more to take a commanding 4-0 lead over the Scarlet Raiders. 

The Scarlet Raiders were unable to crack the vault that was the the Swarthmore defense as they would be blanked for the third time this season.

The Scarlet Raiders will look to rebound against Albertus Magnus on Wednesday.
