Despite Strong Play, #RUNWSOC Falls to FDU-Florham, 2-0

NEWARK, NJ | In a physical game at Frederick Douglass Field on Wednesday evening, the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team fell to FDU-Florham, 2-0. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 4-5-1 while the Devils remain undefeated at 9-0.

The Scarlet Raiders came out strong against the visiting Devils and used their speed down the wings to create chances early on. One of the best chances the Scarlet Raiders had was when Riley Haggerty uncorked a shot from 22 yards out that was tipped off of the crossbar. Shortly after, Bailey Kellenberger sent a dangerous cross in the box that almost gave Rutgers-Newark a 1-0 lead. With 22 minutes remaining on the clock, Julia Nephew had her shot stonewalled by Erica Blackburn. Tamia Howell followed up with the rebound but pushed her shot wide to keep the game knotted up.

Despite the Scarlet Raiders peppering FDU-Florham with shots, it was the Devils who took the lead in the 25th minute. Aleyna Gross sent a ball over the top of the Scarlet Raiders defenders to a streaking Francesca Escudero who beat Katie McLaughlin to the ball and headed it over her for the game's opening goal.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders started similarly to the the first half and it almost resulted in a goal yet again. A loose ball found its way to Howell's foot who put her shot on goal only to have it parried away by Blackburn. In the 78th minute, FDU-Florham would double their lead when Mia Lopez dribbled into the box and hit a low shot into the bottom corner to further increase their lead over the Scarlet Raiders.
