Sanchez Tallies 7 Kills in 3-1 Loss to Hunter College

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad dropped a non-conference bout this evening to Hunter College, 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 25-15, 25-21).

Rutgers-Newark (7-4) hit .062 as a squad and was led by Aliyah Sanchez's seven kills. Defensively, Yzana Harwood paced the team with 15 digs while Angelyse Orellana added 19 assists. Hunter (12-2) received 17 kills from Tessa Winkleman on .314 hitting.

The Scarlet Raiders and Hawks were neck and neck to open the match and neither team could separate until the Hawks used a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 14-9. Rutgers-Newark made a push toward the end with a 5-1 run aided by kills from Kaiel Maynor and Maryann Ijeh. Harwood would tally an ace shortly after, however, a pair of attacking errors would hand the set to the Hawks to put them up 1-0 in the match.

Rutgers-Newark started the second set with an offensive explosion led by a pair of aces from Orellana and a kill by Mia Espinoza. Halfway through the set, the Scarlet Raiders saw their lead dwindle to just two but Sanchez and Shayla Moody boosted the Scarlet Raiders with three kills to ensure they remained in front. With a three point lead, Sanchez powered the Scarlet Raiders through to knot the match up at one each.

Hunter found their groove again in the third set and kept the Scarlet Raiders at bay from the first serve. The Hawks jumped out to a 12-4 lead and Rutgers-Newark was unable to recover as Hunter would go on to lead the match 2-1.

The Scarlet Raiders came out strong in the fourth set and remained in front until the Hawks knotted it up at 14. Hunter responded with a 5-1 to widen the gap between the two teams. Rutgers-Newark was able to cut the lead down to three but they couldn't string together enough points to gain the lead.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday, September 28 when they host Kean University at 7:00 p.m. for their second NJAC match of the season.
