Second Half Flurry Lifts Men's Soccer Past St. Joseph's - Brooklyn

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer squad used a four-goal second-half flurry led by Aslan Kat to topple St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn, 6-1, on Tuesday evening at Frederick Douglass Field.

Rutgers-Newark (1-1-1) took 38 shots and put 23 on target while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (0-2) was held to just six.

The Scarlet Raiders men's soccer squad got off to a quick start in their home opener at Frederick Douglass Field on Tuesday evening. Marco Menacho used his speed along the right flank before sending in a cross that found the head of Ryan Caruso for the game's opening goal. In the 36th minute, the Scarlet Raiders doubled their tally when Brandon Castro headed the ball into the box where freshman Ali Celik gathered it and put it into the back of the net for his first career goal.

Five minutes later St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn would strike. A foul by Sean Manzo gave the Bears a free-kick just outside the box. Victor Naci took advantage of his opportunity and curled the shot past freshman netminder, Ilan Golden, to cut the lead down to one. The game increased to a frantic pace after that as the Scarlet Raiders tried to find their third with constant pressure, however, Christian Chimborazo became a brick wall and parried any attempt away.

The Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on in the second stanza and nearly found their third in the 54th minute when Esteban Hidalgo curled one off of the far post. Rutgers-Newark finally got their third of the game when Frank Lozano charged down the right side and sent a cross onto the foot of Pablo Moreno for the easy tap-in goal. With 9 minutes remaining in the game, Aslan Kat stamped his name in the stat sheet when he collected a loose ball and chipped it into the back of the net. Marlon Rodriguez tallied the fifth goal of the game when he uncorked a cannon of a shot from 30 yards into the top left corner.

Rutgers-Newark's offense continued to fire on all cylinders as Kat netted his second of the game off of a pass from Celik. The Scarlet Raiders would hold off any Bears attacks as they'd go on to win the game convincingly.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, September 9 for the Brick City Classic which begins at 1:00 p.m. at Frederick Douglass Field.
