Late Game Stall Dooms Scarlet Raiders Against Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball took on Montclair State University at The Golden Dome on Wednesday evening and fell 69-57 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action. 

Rutgers-Newark (2-17, 1-11) edged Montclair 46-39 in the rebounding column. Offensively, the Scarlet Raiders were led by Samiyah Horton's 16 points. Tracey Ilderis added 9 points and 9 rebounds for Rutgers-Newark. Montclair (8-11, 5-7) earned the win behind Olivia Vero's 16 points. On the boards, Teresa Wolak grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. 

In the first quarter of play, the Scarlet Raiders exploited the interior behind Tracey Ilderis which led to them taking a 9-8 lead. The Red Hawks responded with a 6-0 run to catapult Rutgers-Newark for the lead. Montclair's offense stepped up in the second stanza, netting 22 points to further extend their lead. Ebony Odom Barnes cashed in from range to prevent the Red Hawks from putting the game out of reach while Samiyah Horton and company chipped away at the lead enough to take a 9-point deficit into the break. 

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders looked refreshed and came out with a purpose. Rutgers-Newark outscored Montclair State 21-18 in the third quarter led by Aliyah Sanchez. Horton and Sanaa Brodie added five points each, using their speed and agility to wiggle their way to the basket to cut the lead down to eight. The Scarlet Raiders offense ran out of steam in the final stanza as they were held to 9 points.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, January 27 when they travel south to take on Rutgers-Camden.
