Women's Basketball Suffers Narrow Defeat to Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball squad lost a narrow game to Rutgers-Camden in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action on Saturday afternoon, 55-54. 

Rutgers-Newark (2-18, 1-12) was led by the trio of Tracey Ilderis, Aliyah Sanchez, and Raihanna Abdus-Salaam who all scored 10 points. Ilderis led the charge on the boards with 9 rebounds while Arlenny Medina dished out a team-high five assists. Rutgers-Camden (1-19, 1-12) picked up its first win of the season behind 15 points from Rahzirah Blocker's game-high 15 points. 

The Scarlet Raiders opened the game with a strong showing, tallying 15 points to Rutgers-Camden's 9. With four minutes remaining in the first quarter, Ilderis put Rutgers-Newark ahead by seven, however, the Scarlet Raptors found their way back into the game. Samiyah Horton bumped the lead back up to eight after Jania Smith cashed in from range. 

Rutgers-Newark upped its offensive production in the second to 21 points as did Rutgers-Camden increasing their total to 16 from 9. Abdus-Salaam hit a long-range jumper to give the Scarlet Raiders its largest lead of the game (12). Sanchez converted a layup with two minutes to go to send the Scarlet Raiders into the break with an 11-point lead. 

When the game turned the page to the second half, Rutgers-Newark's offense slowed down and allowed Rutgers-Camden to close the gap by the end of the third to just two points. One minute into the final stanza, the lead switched into the hands of the Scarlet Raptors. Rutgers-Camden went on a run that extended its lead to eight before the Scarlet Raiders whittled away at the lead to bring it to one with 38 seconds remaining. Rutgers-Newark had two attempts to take the lead, however, both attempts missed the mark.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, January 31 when they host Stockton University at 6:00 p.m.
