Second Half Surge Not Enough to Lift Women's Basketball Past Stockton, 72-54

NEWARK, NJ | Arlenny Medina tied her career-high (10) in the 71-54 loss to Stockton University on Wednesday evening at The Golden Dome in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.

Rutgers-Newark (2-19, 1-13) shot 36.8% from the field and was led by Samiyah Horton's 21 points. Ebony Odom Barnes added 14 points with six rebounds. Stockton (14-7, 11-3) was dominant on the boards and out rebounded the Scarlet Raiders 50-28. Trina Deveny-Bethea tallied a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double in just 15 minutes of playtime for the Ospreys.

Rutgers-Newark squared off against the top of the table in Stockton University and trailed by five after the first quarter. Arlenny Medina drove to the hoop and converted a layup to give the Scarlet Raiders a 7-3 lead, however, their offense would go dormant for 9 minutes allowing Stockton to take a 12-7 lead into the second quarter. In the second, Ebony Odom Barnes ended the Scarlet Raiders' with a driving layup. At the seven-minute mark, Medina once again found the bottom of the nylon which forced Stockton to take a timeout to try to cool off the suddenly red-hot Scarlet Raiders. The timeout worked for the Osprey's as they proceeded to go on a 14-4 run to close out the half.

The Scarlet Raiders' offense picked up in the 3rd quarter, netting 16 points, but Stockton was able to match the intensity with 23 points of their own to further extend their lead. In the final stanza, the Scarlet Raiders recorded their highest output of the game with 21 points but were unable to overcome their earlier deficit as Stockton cruised to the NJAC win.
