Women's Basketball's Slow Start Leads to 86-47 Loss to NJCU

NEWARK, NJ | Samiyah Horton scored a game-high 26 points in a 86-47 loss to New Jersey City University in NJAC action at The Golden Dome on Saturday evening.

Rutgers-Newark (2-12, 1-6) committed 32 turnovers in the loss and shot 28% from the floor. Raihanna Abdus-Salaam finished the game with seven points and one steal. NJCU (7-5, 5-2) shot 39.5% from the floor and was led by Dayjah Anderson's 18 points while Sarah Edmond led the way with 9 rebounds.

Renee Houston-Allen and Tracey Ilderis tallied the only points of the opening stanza for the Scarlet Raiders as they were plagued by seven turnovers which aided NJCU's strong 20-point opener. In the second, the Scarlet Raiders ended their seven-minute scoreless streak with a free throw before Horton converted a layup to cut the lead down to 26-7. Horton further cut into the lead with a pull-up jumper to start to swing momentum in Rutgers-Newark's favor. Arlenny Medina got in on the scoring action with 53 seconds remaining in the half before Raihanna Abdus-Salaam cashed in from deep before the buzzer to send her team into the locker room down 41-17.

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders matched their total from the second quarter, however, NJCU came out with a purpose and tallied their highest point total of the game to prevent the Scarlet Raiders from cutting the deficit down. Rutgers-Newark's offense picked up in the fourth as they went on a 10-0 run that lasted four minutes until it was broken up by free throws. That late run wasn't enough to overcome the earlier scoring drought as NJCU would hold onto the win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, January 10 when they host TCNJ at 1:00 pm.
