MONTCLAIR, NJ | Rutgers-Newark women's soccer (5-5-3) could not pull out the result away from home as the Red Hawks (5-4-5) took the 3-0 victory.
Montclair State was hot to start - they collected the first three shots of the game. Karla Valencia fashioned a shot of her own, but it was the Red Hawks that got on the board first. In the 34th minute, Mackenzie Albert tucked home to give the hosts the lead.
The opening goal woke up the Scarlet Raiders somewhat, and Leila Ettayebi fired off a shot before the end of the half.
After the break, Rutgers-Newark really came at their opponents. Ettayebi put up three shots in the first five minutes, but unfortunately none of them hit the back of the net. Not long after, the Red Hawks found a second opening. Aileen Cahill scored in the 61st minute to double Montclair's lead.
This second goal really put a dent in the Scarlet Raiders' comeback attempt. They found some more spirit in the final ten minutes, but an Aria Hicks goal in the 88th minute put the nail in the coffin. A deflating defeat for Rutgers-Newark women's soccer.
The Scarlet Raiders go again on Wednesday, October 16th. They'll head to Union, NJ to take on Kean at 7:30 PM.
