Men’s Soccer Share the Points with Kean

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (7-5-3) went up by two, but Kean (3-7-5) came storming back to earn a draw at 2-2.

Rutgers-Newark looked lively in the opening stages. Pablo Moreno was having plenty of joy on the right side, as well as Marco Menacho. Jake Milne found a good chance from a Menacho cross, but goalkeeper Dominic Ridge was equal to it.

In the 19th minute, Moreno played a through ball over the top that fell perfectly to Erick Cortes. Cortes was in on the goalkeeper, one on one, and finished easily to give the Scarlet Raiders the lead.

Less than a minute later, Bryan Rodriguez played another ball that singled out Cortes, who had a tougher angle on this occasion. However, no angle is too great for the star sophomore, and he netted a 34 second brace.

However, the Cougars did not put their heads down. With 15 minutes to go in the half, Tyler Manteiro found Donte East with a searching ball across the box, and East finished easily to cut the lead in half. Rutgers-Newark did fashion a quick response, but the goal was ruled out for offside. At the break, the score stood at 2-1.

In the second half, it was the visitors who came out swinging. They created two wonderful chances in the first three minutes, and forced a stellar save at point blank range from Pedro Flores.

But Kean just kept on pushing. Rutgers-Newark had their chances too, but the Cougars looked dangerous, and eventually they got their equalizer. Josser Amaya made a run from deep in the 77th minute and snuck one in the near post to knot the score at two apiece.

The final ten minutes were dramatic - three yellow cards were given out, both teams challenged for the lead, and Bryan Rodriguez had a bullet header saved off of a corner kick. At the end of the night, neither team could break the deadlock, and it ended with honors even.

Men's soccer will hit the road this Saturday, October 19th for their next NJAC matchup. They will head to Ewing, NJ to take on TCNJ 11:00 am.
