Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Ettayebi Scores Again to Bring Home 1-0 Win Over Rutgers-Camden

NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers-Newark women's soccer (5-4-2) pulled out A crucial conference victory over the Scarlet Raptors (5-4-2), keeping a clean sheet in the process. Final score: 1-0.

The play in the beginning stages was evenly shared, although the home side had the better of the chances. The Scarlet Raiders had two corner kicks in the first ten minutes, the second of which resulted in a strong header from Ruby Hogue. Hogue's attempt would've likely been on goal, but it was blocked before it got there.

Rutgers-Camden got their first corner in the 12th minute, which forced a jumping save from goalkeeper Angela Amaya. The first shot from open play also came from the visitors when Josie Jackson-Conner tried a curling left-footed effort from outside the penalty area. Amaya was able to keep it out with relative ease.

The Scarlet Raptors continued pressing, but in the 34th minute, Leila Ettayebi found space on the left wing. She cut in on her right foot, and rocketed the ball off of the right post and in, an absolutely spectacular goal. There was nothing the goalkeeper could do about it, and there's nothing that any opposing defender can do to keep Ettayebi off the scoresheet this season.

Things calmed down for the remainder of the half, but quickly heated back up after the break. Emily Karlicki found Ettayebi in the box with a clever chipped through ball, but she couldn't quite get enough power on the shot. Eight minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders won a free kick about 25 yards out. Seoane Oaxaca tried a shot, and just barely missed the frame.

Both teams took shots from range as the half went on. Ruby Hogue smashed one off the post from 30 yards out, and Jazmin Brown of Rutgers-Camden forced a save from Angela Amaya with a shot from a similar distance.

The Scarlet Raptors were pushing late in the game, creating multiple chances off of corner kicks in the final ten minutes. However, it wasn't to be. Rutgers-Newark secured an important win to even up their conference record, and Camden evened theirs as well.

Women's soccer goes again this Saturday, October 5th when they host William Paterson at 7:00 pm right here on Frederick Douglass Field.
